THE SITUATION WITH SLOGANS IN LARNACA IS OUT OF CONTROL - THEY DO NOT EVEN RESPECT AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

THE SITUATION WITH SLOGANS IN LARNACA IS OUT OF CONTROL - THEY DO NOT EVEN RESPECT AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - Filenews 5/5 by Natasa Christoforou

One of the biggest problems of Larnaca is the writing of slogans by organized fans of teams, mainly AEK and Anorthosis, which have exceeded all limits. The unacceptable writing of slogans by Anorthosis fans on palm trees on the coastal front of Athinon Avenue two years ago, was imitated by those of AEK who had the audacity to write slogans inside the fenced archaeological site, in which the ancient port of Kition is located.

The brainless wrote slogans with spray on the sidewalk but also on the busy Kilkis Street, near the Archaeological Museum of Larnaca and next to the AEK building. In particular, they vandalized large palm trees located in front of the monument in honour of Savvakis Savvas Kyriakou, who was murdered by the Turks in 1974. In addition, they wrote slogans on all the recycling bins, but also on the traffic signs located at a small roundabout. Unfortunately, however, they did not stop there. They illegally entered the fenced area, where the priceless ancient port of Kition is located, and wrote many slogans on a large wall. From the range of the slogans, it is clear that it took the fools several days to complete their unacceptable "work" undisturbed.

The issue brings to light again the issue of impunity for fans, but also the need to take measures both by the Police and by the teams themselves. In Larnaca, fools target public spaces, parks, traffic signs, house walls and now the city's monuments every day.

The mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, did not hide his anger and indignation speaking to "F". "One of the biggest problems we have is the slogans from the organized fans of the teams. They have reached unadvanced levels and we are thinking about what to do. It's not just in this area. They are all over the city, they don't respect anything," noted Mr. Vyras, adding that the issue was repeatedly raised with the Police, while a meeting with the groups themselves is planned. "We are having various thoughts such as increasing the spectacle tax on the teams, so that we can make a permanent crew to clean up the slogans. We would like a special team from the Police to arrest people who carry out these actions," he added.

The mayor of Larnaca spoke of a huge cost for the municipality that amounts to many thousands of euros annually. "We want 4 to 5 people permanently just to erase slogans and the point is that we erase them and the next day they write them again. It's as if we didn't do anything, they do it on purpose. Our effort is unfair. We are talking about permanent groups of fans who go around the city and write slogans."
