THE ROOF OF AN ABANDONED BUILDING COLLAPSED IN LARNACA - SEARCHES WITH DETECTION DOGS IN THE AREA WHERE HOMELESS LIVED - Filenews 22/5 by Natasa Chrisoforou

The Larnaca Fire Brigade, Police and EOA Larnaca were alerted after the collapse of the roof of an abandoned house, on Thursday afternoon on Stavrodriou Street in the parish of Sotiros in Larnaca.

The road was closed and emergency measures were taken since the next house, which is also abandoned, is in danger of collapse.

Due to the fact that homeless people live in this house from time to time, detection dogs were mobilized by the Fire Brigade. However, about an hour later, the EMAK investigations were completed and fortunately nothing was found to indicate that there was a person in the area.

After the collapse, the competent authorities decided to carry out a controlled demolition of part of the building. The fire brigade will then remove rubble in order to see if anyone lived in the area.

However, from the first surveys carried out with the detection dogs, nothing like this was apparent.

The president of EOA Larnaca, Angelos Hadjicharalambous, who is in the area, said that because there was information that at times the building was used by homeless people, EMAK was mobilized, which will conduct investigations.

He also noted that the specific building was not in the EOAL records handed over by the competent authorities, indicating that only the next one was classified as dangerous.

The president of EOAL reiterated that it is the responsibility of the owners to take the necessary actions to remove the danger. However, due to the very dangerous situation for public safety, the two buildings will be demolished in the coming days by EOAL.
