Paphos welcomed yesterday the relay of the Commonwealth Games, an event with special symbolism and international significance, which connects our city with a major sporting event and with values that go beyond the boundaries of sport.
The baton, which travels from country to country, carries messages of cooperation, solidarity, respect and peaceful coexistence, reminding that sports are not only about performance and competition, but also about the power to unite people, inspire young people and cultivate team spirit.
During the event, the baton was handed over to the Mayor of Paphos, Mr. Angelos Onisiforos, by the World Champion athlete and fellow citizen Iosif Kesidis.
Mr. George Papageorgiou, Member of the Executive Board of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, also addressed a greeting, underlining the importance of the event and the values it stands for.
The event was attended by children from the Multipurpose Center for Social Welfare "Zeta Emilianidou" of the Municipality of Paphos, while children from the Folklore Club Ktima presented traditional dances.
The Commonwealth Games have always been an institution that promotes friendship between peoples and cultures, emphasizing participation, fairness, and mutual respect — values that remain relevant and meaningful.
