STARTING OF THE SEA TURTLE HATCHING PERIOD
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research informs the public that the nesting season of sea turtles in Cyprus has begun, as the first nests have already been identified on our beaches.
The public is invited to comply with the regulations in the Lara - Toxeytra and "Polis - Gialia" protected areas, helping to protect the sea turtles and the marine environment.
From June 1 to September 30, in Lara - Toxytra, it is prohibited, among other things, to stay on the beach at night, to place umbrellas, beds and tents, as well as fishing, with the exception of fishing from the shore.
It is also noted that, the passage or anchoring of a boat in the protected area up to a depth of 20 meters is prohibited from 1st May until 31st October. Holders of a small-scale coastal fishing professional license are exempt from the passage ban, in May and October of each year.
As for the "Lake" beach for the period May 15 - September 30, the placement of beds, umbrellas, caravans, camps or other similar structures is prohibited, while for the maritime area "Polis - Gialia" (0–10m. equivalent), the passage and anchoring of motor boats is prohibited, with the exception of small-scale coastal fishing professionals.
It is also reminded that harassing or feeding sea turtles, as well as any activity that may affect their physical behaviour and intrusion into nests and eggs are prohibited.
At the same time, within the framework of the European LIFE ADAPTS project, sea turtles protection and monitoring actions are being implemented in Cyprus, aimed at strengthening their resistance to climate change. Among other things, satellite tags are used to monitor the movements and behaviour of turtles in the Mediterranean.
It is noted that only 1-2 baby turtles per thousand manage to survive and return to the beaches where they were born to breed. Their protection is crucial to the preservation of this unique and iconic species in Cyprus.
Let's protect the sea turtles and our natural environment!
