The full announcement:
The Department of Road Transport informs the public that, following information received from the company General Motors, 664 vehicles of the manufacturer SAAB have been identified, which are affected by a recall concerning the TAKATA driver's airbag. In particular, in case of activation of the airbag, there is a possibility of rupture of its detonator, resulting in the launch of metal fragments, which can cause serious injury or death.
Affected owners can proceed with the replacement of the defective part through a licensed vehicle technician, with the possibility of securing the necessary technical support and the required spare parts.
The affected vehicles (registration number and/or chassis number) are posted on https://www.gov.cy/mtcw/saab/ website as well as on the website of the Department of Road Transport. Affected owners have been sent registered mail with all the information to the postal address registered in the Department's computerized system, SMS messages to the number registered in the computerized system of the Department.
The Department calls on all affected owners to immediately proceed with the required actions in accordance with the relevant legislation applicable in cases where there is no representative of the manufacturer in the Republic of Cyprus. Owners are invited to within an eight-month period:
replace the defective airbag by a licensed vehicle technician HERE https://www.philenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/takata.pdf, and submit to the Department of Road Transport the required original certificates proving the completion of the works.
In the event that the necessary actions are not completed within the specified deadline, the vehicle's certificate of suitability will be immediately suspended without further notice. By extension, the registration certificate will be suspended and the technical inspection will not be allowed until full compliance.
The Department of Road Transport recommends that the affected vehicles not be used until the defective component is replaced. This is a serious road safety issue, as timely compliance prevents serious hazards and protects the lives of drivers, passengers and third parties.
