POED - RETURNS TO THE ISSUE OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE - WHAT IT ASKS FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO DEAL WITH THE WORRYING PHENOMENON - Filenews 13/5 by Evangelia Sizopoulou

The Ministry of Education requests the appointment of meetings on a regular basis, to discuss issues related to school violence and delinquency, for their evaluation and for timely decision-making.

The teachers' organization, based on the extremely interesting research it carried out on the issue of school violence and delinquency and the particularly informative findings that have emerged and which reflect the prevailing picture, addressed a letter to the competent Minister, declaring at the same time its readiness for cooperation in order to deal with these phenomena in our schools once and for all.

It is worth noting that the POED states that the Ministry of Education, as the competent Authority, should have already proceeded with a social dialogue with the educational organizations, so that targeted political decisions can be made, which will further support the Public School in managing these incidents.

"We remind you that POED has already sent its positions, at your urging, in a letter on February 3, 2026, but unfortunately to date we have not been invited to any discussion on such a serious issue. The Organization has also submitted on April 22, 2026, as requested by you, a comprehensive proposal for the institutionalization of a fair and objective Complaint Management Protocol against Teachers," the letter notes.

It is recalled that in the POED survey, which has been presented recently, 1017 teachers participated, who filled out an anonymous electronic questionnaire.

Some of the findings are as follows:

95% of teachers state that incidents of school violence and delinquency have increased.

28% of teachers say they do not feel safe in the workplace, while an additional 27% of teachers do not always feel safe in the workplace.

22% of teachers believe that school is not a safe place for students, while an additional 31% of teachers believe that school is not always a safe place for children.

Regarding the frequency of the occurrence of the various forms of violence between students, frequent to very frequent occurrence is reported as follows:
-Verbal violence
-Physical violence

-Online violence

Of particular concern are findings related to frequent to very frequent violence against teachers:
