New evacuations of residential apartment buildings in Larnaca have been prepared for a week by the local District Self-Government Organization (EOAL). The five buildings will be classified as "dangerous" and relevant notifications will be given to the tenants. One apartment building is in the area of Chrysopolitissa, another three in the settlement of Agioi Anargyroi II and one in the parish of Agios Ioannis. The last four are part of the "KtiZO" program and their tenants will be handled by the Ministry of the Interior.
The one in Chrysopolitissa has 17 apartments and the residents will be given the opportunity to stay for a while in hotels. As far as the "Madona Court" building in Faneromeni is concerned, the deadline given by EOAL for its evacuation expires today. At a working breakfast with journalists, the president of the Organization, Angelos Hadjicharalambous, said that 40 people live in this apartment building, with whom social workers of the Municipality of Larnaca are in contact. Those of them who have no alternative will stay in hotels made available through the Civil Defense plan and the "Xenios" Program of the Municipality of Larnaca. According to Mr. Hadjicharalambous, some owners of "Madona Court" expressed the intention to repair the apartment building and remove its danger.
The Larnaca District Self-Government Organization is in full mobilization immediately after the tragedy with the collapse of a building in Germasogeia, trying to map all the dangerous buildings in the province of Larnaca. The municipalities and the Larnaca District Administration had handed him files for 563 potentially dangerous buildings, however, from the inspections the number, so far, has risen to 889. Specifically, 427 were detected in the Municipality of Larnaca, 23 in the Municipality of Aradippou, 80 in the Municipality of Lefkara, 34 in the Municipality of Dromolaxia - Meneou, 12 in the Municipality of Athienou and 313 in the community clusters.
"We have given 150 buildings to private individuals for visual inspection and 100 have been returned. Of these, it was found that there is a visible risk of collapse for 23 residential and 40 uninhabited buildings", indicated Mr. Hadjicharalambous, reiterating that the responsibility lies with the owners, who if they do not comply will face justice, but also an administrative fine.
Ten of the dangerous uninhabited buildings in Larnaca have been sealed, while the EOAL has also closed the "D' LUX" club in the area of the port of Larnaca, which was housed in a highly dangerous building, which has not been inhabited for years. According to Mr. Hadjicharalambous, parties were organized in the area of the club, in which fencing was placed. "Our goal is to have a complete picture of the unsuitable buildings by the end of May," he said, noting that there will also be demolitions of dangerous buildings.
