FARMERS ARE BEING STRANGLED BY WATER CUTS IN PAPHOS

FARMERS ARE BEING STRANGLED BY WATER CUTS IN PAPHOS - Pafos Press 27/5

The reduced quantities of irrigation water and the closing of water meters by the Water Development Department of the Ministry of Agriculture are causing strong reactions and a wave of indignation in the rural communities of Paphos, at a particularly critical period for seasonal crops and greenhouses.

According to information and complaints expressed by affected farmers, the problem began to be particularly noticeable since yesterday, the first day after the elections, with producers noticing significant reductions in water supplies and cases of closing water meters, a fact that, as they claim, leaves crops without adequate irrigation amid increased temperatures.

The greatest concerns concern seasonal crops and greenhouse units, where a continuous water supply is considered vital for maintaining production. Producers speak of a risk of destruction of plantations and serious financial losses, if the same situation continues in the coming days.

As they report, the situation has caused intense unrest in communities in Paphos, with many considering that the measures being implemented are suffocating and without adequate information or a transitional period for adaptation.

Already, according to the same information, dynamic mobilizations and reactions are being considered by organized groups of farmers and affected producers, who are demanding immediate intervention by the Ministry of Agriculture and a review of the decisions of the Water Development Department.

The affected producers warn that if there are no immediate solutions and clear answers, the reactions will escalate in the coming period, speaking of a situation that directly threatens the survival of crops and the income of dozens of rural families.
