Naval presence around Cyprus returning to normal levels amid fragile Iran ceasefire, sources say
The de-escalation seen in recent weeks in the conflict involving Iran is also leaving its mark on the eastern Mediterranean, with a noticeable reduction in the naval presence in the region.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the fragile ceasefire, the area around Cyprus is showing signs of easing tensions, as naval forces that had gathered in the region are gradually withdrawing.
According to well-informed sources speaking to Kathimerini, the eastern Mediterranean is slowly returning to normal conditions, with only the naval units usually present during calmer periods remaining in the area.
The only exceptions, the same sources said, are days when there is increased activity such as NATO naval operations or other military exercises. In those cases, the number of warships and aircraft participating in operations temporarily rises.
Around 10 warships remain
According to the latest information available to Cypriot authorities, around 10 warships of various types are currently patrolling the wider region.
French naval vessels remain stationed in areas off Cyprus, alongside the Italian warship deployed by Italy since the start of the hostilities. Also present is a German naval vessel, which routinely patrols the area as part of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
The Greek frigate Elli is also docked at Limassol port as part of efforts to strengthen Cyprus’ defense.
However, according to competent sources, no U.S. naval forces are currently operating in the eastern Mediterranean, with American vessels having withdrawn from the area.
