A 51-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison for raping and hitting his estranged wife, offenses that occurred in February 2025.
What happened in a small hotel room in Paphos did not leave the Criminal Court unmoved, which sent the accused to prison for seven years, especially because he did not initially admit and forced the victim to live the tragic events again.
According to the Court's decision issued recently, the accused was found guilty after a hearing, of the charge of rape, sexual harassment, threat of violence, assault causing actual bodily harm and the crime of harassment, offenses directed against his wife.
The accused and the complainant were married but separated, while the two minor children of the family lived with their father, with the parents staying in rooms of separate hotel accommodations within the Paphos District.
On 02/02/2025 and after a telephone conversation took place between the accused and the complainant, the latter visited her husband at the hotel, where he was staying with their children.
Due to the complainant's desire to be close to her children, she and the accused decided to stay together in the specific accommodation, which they did until 07/02/2025, a date on which they all decided together to continue their joint stay in the hotel where the complainant's room was located.
The next day, when the family had moved into the hotel, the accused began to accuse her of sleeping with other men.
Around 4:00, in the afternoon of the same day, the accused brought whiskey and beer into the room, so the complainant and the accused started drinking.
A short time later, the accused started insulting her and pushed her to the bed where he raped her, while she started crying.
His wife kept crying and told him that she never loved him and that she would never love him and that he was a rapist.
The accused became angry and started hitting her repeatedly on the head with his fists. The complainant started shouting and the accused then left her. She went to the kitchen of the hotel where she reported what happened, which is why the Police were notified.
It was the Court's finding that the accused seems to have acted in this heinous way in the wider context of a particularly dysfunctional relationship and cohabitation with the complainant and being in a state of emotional charge and anger since he believed that she had sexual contacts with other men.
"Although the case under consideration is not among the most serious of its kind compared to other cases that have dealt with the Courts, the offenses committed by the accused remain very serious," the three Judges said.
Imposing the sentence of 7 years in prison, they stressed that the non-admission of the accused, which would be a sign of practical remorse and would not expose the victim to the mental test of the trial and the revival of the traumatic events, does not allow for a similar reduction in the sentence, leniency that could be exercised in such a case.

A six-year prison sentence was imposed yesterday, Wednesday (6/5), by the Limassol Criminal Court on a 26-year-old defendant, who was found guilty after admitting to the offenses of possession and possession with the purpose of supplying another person with 110 grams of cocaine, possession and supply of 175 grams of cocaine, use of cocaine, possession and possession for the purpose of supplying 730 grams of cannabis, possession and supply of one kilogram of cannabis, cannabis smoking and money laundering.
According to the facts of the case, following information that the accused possessed, trafficked and supplied quantities of narcotic substances, a court warrant was obtained to search his apartment and vehicle. Members of YKAN on the afternoon of November 1, 2025 located the 26-year-old driving a car and stopping with his vehicle, in an area in Limassol and called him to stay at the scene for a check. The 26-year-old started his vehicle, crashed into the patrol vehicle and developed speed, driving dangerously in his car to escape. At a point in the route he followed, he was stopped by the members of the Police, who proceeded to arrest him.
In a search of his vehicle, 3 mobile phones were located and received. Subsequently, during the search of his home and its warehouse, various objects were found in various places with traces of green dry cannabis plant matter and white matter, precision scales, other related items as well as the total amount of €2,680.
In his interrogation testimony, the accused admitted that he had previously called his mother to conceal specific evidence and claimed that he was approached by a person he did not name in order to cooperate in the purchase and sale of drugs for a percentage of the sale price of cannabis and cocaine. The accused further stated that his activity lasted for two months and in addition to the quantities found in the apartment where he lived, he had sold other quantities.
When determining the sentence of the accused, the seriousness of the offenses he admitted and the long-term escalation observed were taken into account. The urgent need to impose strict and dissuasive penalties in the context of efforts to combat the scourge of drugs was emphasized.
The Criminal Court, in its decision, pointed out that the circumstances of the commission of the offenses were particularly aggravating since this conscious involvement of the accused with the trafficking of drugs, both class A and class B, lasted for a period of 2 months, concerned a total amount of 1 kg and 730 g. of a cannabis plant and 285 g. cocaine and he was directly and actively involved in the storage, packaging, trafficking and supply of drugs for a financial benefit, not insignificant, while acting in collaboration with third parties.
His personal and family circumstances, his admission and his cooperation with the Police were taken in favour of the accused, especially in relation to the charges that arose due to his own reports.
It was noted, however, that his cooperation with the Police was not complete since he did not reveal his supplier and the persons with whom he had cooperation, nor did he indicate the places where their relevant meetings took place, an element that would be of increased importance. His clean criminal record, his age and his inclusion in a rehabilitation program were also taken into account.
The Court examined the issue of the succession of sentences and imposed concurrent sentences of 6 years in prison on the charges of supplying 1 kg of cannabis and possession of 730 g. of the substance in question for the purpose of supplying it to other persons, 4 years old in the categories of the supply of 175 g. of cocaine and possession of 110 gr. of the substance in question for the purpose of supplying it to other persons and lesser penalties in the categories of cocaine use, smoking a cannabis plant and money laundering. A confiscation order was also issued for the amount seized.
