CASINO - CYPRIOTS AT SLOT MACHINES, FOREIGNERS AT THE TABLES - WHO LEAVES MORE MONEY

CASINO - CYPRIOTS AT SLOT MACHINES, FOREIGNERS AT THE TABLES - WHO LEAVES MORE MONEY - Filenews 7/5 by Charalambos Zakos

Cypriots show a clear preference for gaming machines, or as they are more widely known "slot machines", compared to gaming tables, such as roulette and blackjack, over casino customers from other countries, while at the same time the larger amounts are naturally played at the tables.

According to the Gaming and Casino Supervision Authority's activity report for 2024-2025, a total of 1191 gaming machines and 107 gaming tables were operating in casinos in Cyprus during 2025, showing an increase of 18 points in gaming machines compared to 2024.

Specifically, in the Limassol casino-resort there are 1041 gaming machines and 102 gaming tables, while 50 gaming machines also operated in the satellite casinos of Nicosia, Ayia Napa and Paphos, while in the one in Nicosia there were also 5 gaming tables.

Slots for Cypriots

An important element is the fact that Cypriots, according to the report, prefer gaming machines more during their visits to casinos, in contrast to foreign customers, who bet at the tables.

This is also one reason why there is an increase in gaming table revenue in 2024 and 2025, since the operation of the resort casino in Limassol attracted international customers who prefer this type of bet, compared to slot machines, however, the main reason is another.

The increase recorded in gaming tables in 2024 and 2025 is linked on the one hand to the operation of the resort casino in Limassol and the attraction of international customers, on the other hand to the diversification and increase of available tables compared to the previous period.

At that time, the market was mainly based on satellite casinos, which, as can be seen from the data cited above, had a limited number of gaming tables and placed more emphasis on gaming machines. This fact explains why gaming machines dominated gross income until 2023.

It should also be noted that larger amounts are wagered at the tables. Therefore, although the ratio of tables and slots is uneven, there is a greater balance in revenue.

The percentages

In 2025, gaming tables had a 47% share of total gross income, while gaming machines accounted for 53%. This shows that the two categories are now very close in terms of revenue, with gaming machines maintaining a slight lead.

This picture is also explained by the fact that larger amounts are usually bet on the gaming tables.

Thus, although there are more gaming machines, tables have a very large share of the total revenue.

In 2024, the picture was almost the same, with gaming tables at 46% and gaming machines at 54%. The slight increase in tables in 2025 indicates that the market is gradually moving more towards this type of game.

The change is more clearly visible if compared to previous years. In 2023, gaming tables had a share of 38%, while gaming machines had a 62% share. In 2022, the difference was even greater, with 30% for tables and 70% for gaming machines. In 2021 and 2020, gaming machines had an even stronger presence, with rates of 73% and 74% respectively.

Based on the data, until 2023 the market was mainly based on gaming machines. From 2024 onwards, however, gaming tables are significantly strengthened, especially after the operation of the resort casino in Limassol.

Overall, gaming tables are on the rise.

From 26% in 2020 and 27% in 2021, they rose to 30% in 2022, 38% in 2023, 46% in 2024 and 47% in 2025. In contrast, gaming machines fell from 74% in 2020 and 73% in 2021 to 53% in 2025. They remain first division, but now with a much smaller difference.
