BREATHING A SIGH OF RELIEF - RARE RECORD OF WATER INFLOW IN MAY - BEST PERFORMANCE IN 40 YEARS - Filenews 20/5 by Angelos Nikolaou

After the historic March and the excellent April, the spring rains overturn the data of the prolonged drought and the month we are going through.

By May 19, water inflow reached 9.6 million cubic liters (CML), recording the best May performance in the last forty years, according to official data from the Department of Water Development (WDD). This is the top performance ever recorded for the month of May since the Department maintains systematic and detailed data, while other inflows are expected in the coming days.

The historic milestone of May did not come as an isolated event, but as a continuation of a stunning spring setting that began in March, turning around the extremely unsettling and dry winter that preceded it.

Based on the historical data available to the WDD since 1987:

-This March made history, as the inflow skyrocketed to 35.4 million cubic liters, being the largest monthly inflow ever recorded for this month.

-The momentum continued unabated in April, with the quantities flowing into the dams reaching 23.6 ECU. This performance ranks this April as the second best in the last 38 years.

According to the latest data of May 19, the total amount stored in the dams of the Southern Pipeline now amounts to 71.2 million cubic liters, with the total occupancy reaching 37.6%.
