Last month, the EAC paid Siemens an advance payment of €9 million for the purchase of three generators, as part of the upgrade of the power plant in Dhekelia, the President of the Authority, George Petrou, told KYPE.
According to Mr. Petrou, the agreement with the German company provides for the delivery of the first generator in April 2028, the second in August 2028 and the third in May 2029.
The EAC President said that the new machines, industrial type, will be able to connect to the system in just 5 minutes. As he explained, this will allow the Authority to shut them down when needed, unlike existing machines, which require a lot of time to be ready to connect to the system.
The old machines in Dhekelia must be withdrawn by December 31, 2029, according to Mr. Petrou. For this reason, as he said, the EAC is also proceeding with the installation of batteries for energy storage at the station.
The batteries, with a total storage capacity of 80 Megawatts, have already been ordered and are expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2027.
Mr. Petrou also mentioned that the installation of additional batteries in Moni, with a total storage capacity of 100 Megawatts, is planned. The project is in the process of obtaining a planning permit and a building permit.
At the same time, he noted that the installation of batteries in Vasiliko, with a total storage capacity of 250 Megawatts, is also under study.
