THE NOOSE IS TIGHTENING ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MINORS - CHRISTODOULIDIS' INTERVENTION FOR PROTECTION - Filenews 16/4

The age of 15 is specified as the minimum threshold for creating and maintaining an account on social media platforms. According to a post by the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, the goal is to protect children, strengthen families and implement the framework more effectively than the platforms themselves.

"The protection of our children in the digital environment is a top priority for our governance," he says.

He adds that the Republic of Cyprus is among the EU Member States that immediately proceed with the use of the European technical proposal for age verification online. "Within the year, this proposal will be integrated into the national application 'Digital Citizen'," he says.

He points out that the relevant bill will regulate the scope, the obligation to verify age, the penalties in case of non-compliance and the necessary transitional provisions.
