THE MOVEMENT OF A VEHICLE BECOMES MANDATORY IN THE EVENT OF A ROAD COLLISION UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS

THE MOVEMENT OF A VEHICLE BECOMES MANDATORY IN THE EVENT OF A ROAD COLLISION UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS - Filenews 2/4 by Theodora Nikolaou

The movement of a vehicle in the event of a road collision becomes mandatory, with the adoption by the Plenary Session of the Parliament of the amendment to the Motor Vehicles and Traffic Movement Law.

The purpose of the proposal submitted by Dimitris Dimitriou on behalf of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Rally, is to amend the Motor Vehicles and Traffic Movement Law, so that on the one hand it becomes mandatory to move a vehicle in the event of a road collision, if the prescribed conditions are met, and on the other hand to constitute an offense the non-movement and/or the non-observance of the procedures, as well as the incitement or coercion or the attempt to induce or coerce to violate the provisions of the law.

As the rapporteur of the proposal stated in his statement before the Plenary, this is "a correction of the legislation passed in the summer, which was found to be not applicable. The main weakness as identified, which insurance companies exploit, is the need for mutual consent of both drivers to move their vehicles after a minor accident. Therefore, we come to correct this and we hope that Cyprus will cease to be the only country where we will not see this phenomenon on the roads when two vehicles that have minor damage cause traffic jam."

The law proposal was passed into law with 23 votes in favour (DISY, DIKO, DIPA, Ecologists and 3 independents), 13 against from AKEL and one abstention from ELAM.
