Richard Sale presents - THE CYPRUS TRUCE FORCE December 1963 – March 1964 & THE INCIDENT AT LARNACA AIRPORT 1978

Richard is ex-military and has been intimately associated with Cyprus for many years. He was here at the time of the 1963/64 troubles, was deployed operationally in 1967 when on exercise from Sandhurst after the threatened Turkish invasion, and for four years in the early 1990s he led the strategic planning for the Bases. He has been on the Island since 1991, and he and his wife Ali now live in the Troodos village of Kouka.

THE CYPRUS TRUCE FORCE December 1963 – March 1964

In Cyprus today there is an overwhelming focus on the events of 1974 when the coup against President Makarios led to the Turkish invasion and the loss of the north of the island.

This overwhelming focus tends to obscure what happened in 1963 when serious inter-communal fighting broke out in Nicosia and spread to the rest of the island, leading eventually to the intervention of the UN. On this occasion Britain reacted very quickly and an ad-hoc Truce Force was put together from Army and RAF personnel in the Bases and deployed to Nicosia under the command for Maj Gen Peter Young, the Commander Land Forces.

This Truce Force succeeded in stopping the fighting in Nicosia and deterring the Turkish resident battalion from assaulting the city, and Turkey itself from invading. It also established the original Green Line.

In his presentation, Richard Sale will take us through the establishment and activities of this force until the arrival of the UN, drawing on the diary that his mother kept throughout the 63 to 65 period together with the intelligence reports and personal recollections of the General and his ADC. This unpublished and sometimes highly indiscreet diary contains much insider commentary because his father, Colonel John Sale, was at this time the Defence Advisor at the British High Commission and so intimately involved.

It was John Sale’s personal relationships with the principal actors on both sides that provided the necessary access to enable the tortuous ceasefire negotiations to succeed. For this he was awarded the CBE.

THE INCIDENT AT LARNACA AIRPORT

In February 1978 there was a major terrorist incident at Larnaca airport that resulted in a battle between Cypriot and Egyptian forces and significant loss of life and property.

Although globally famous at the time, the incident is now little known, indeed many in Cyprus have never heard of it.

In his presentation, Richard Sale will take us through a blow by blow account, drawing on publicly available information and also personal recollections from friends who participated, from the Minister in charge to a pilot flying under orders from the President, and a member of the National Guard deployed at the airport.
