TEN DRIVERS LOST THEIR LICENCES IN 6 DAYS - THEY TESTED POSITIVE IN A DRUG AND BREATHALYZER TEST - Filenews 16/4 by Michalis Chatzivasilis

Ten drivers lost their driver's license after the implementation of the measure by the Traffic Police on the condition that they test positive for narcotics and breathalyzers.

The decision was made on Maundy Thursday, after it was found that dozens of drivers were taking the wheel while previously using drugs or having consumed alcohol or both substances together, thus posing a danger to themselves or other road users.

In six days, 10 drivers lost their driver's licenses, either because they were caught driving drunk or because they had used drugs.

The deprivation of their license was done immediately and at the same time the Department of Road Transport was informed to register this decision in its systems, so that in the event that they are found again at the wheel while they have been deprived of the license, they will end up in Court.

According to the decision of the Traffic Police, when a driver is found positive after a drug test, then he loses his driver's license immediately.

To get it again will not be an easy task, since he will have to provide a medical certificate that he is "clean" of drugs and have been examined by a Medical Council that he is capable of driving.

In the event that someone tests positive for breathalyzers, then whether or not they will lose the right to drive will depend on the amount of alcohol they have in their blood.

If the limit is 22mg and the test person has an indication of more than 72mg, then it is counted as the first time and if he is arrested again, then he will immediately lose his license.

Also, in the case of a new driver (i.e. the person who has recently obtained a driver's license) or concerns a professional driver or an elderly person, then his license will be immediately revoked, if the alcohol reading is above 9mg.

It is noted that the right to the Police to withdraw driving licenses has been granted by the Minister of Transport, after it was found that many accidents occur due to the consumption of drugs or alcohol.
