REDUCED QUANTITIES OF WATER FOR FARMERS AGAIN THIS YEAR - Pafos Live 17/4
The increased water flows in the dams in the last two months are not expected to radically change the situation in terms of the quantities of water that will be granted to farmers.
Although the request of the agricultural organizations and those involved in the primary sector themselves is the radical revision of the plans by the water development department, the WDD is working on three-year scenarios and therefore cannot allocate large quantities for the next growing season.
At the meeting of the Water Management Advisory Committee scheduled for April 24, at the end of this year's hydrological year, the Department of Water Development will inform all stakeholders about the water image of the island and the appropriate water policy.
The firm position of the farmers of the Paphos district, especially in the low-lying area, is that in addition to the quantities of treated water from the tertiary wastewater treatment plant of the sewerage board, at least three to five million cubic meters of water from the Asprokremmos dam should be granted in order to allow professionals to cultivate seasonal plantations in addition to the permanent plantations. At the same time, they note that the Mavrokolympos dam has been added to the water balance this year with almost one and a half million cubic meters, which will cover most of the needs of banana growers and other plantations in Pegeia and Kissonerga.
