The President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, visited today the facilities of the "Andreas Papandreou" Air Base, in Paphos, where he was briefed on the infrastructure of the Base and on the progress of the implementation of the EU Regional Firefighting Center.

During his visit to the Air Base, President Christodoulides was informed by the Administration of the Base about the works regarding the expansion and upgrade of the Base.

The European Commission's initiative for the establishment of the Regional Centre is the product of systematic cooperation for the implementation of a proposal by the Republic of Cyprus, highlighting the active role of Cyprus in shaping European civil protection planning.

The creation of the Centre will once again highlight the strategic role of Cyprus in the context of European and regional civil protection, strengthening Europe's collective capacity to respond to the challenges of the climate crisis, while at the same time, substantially upgrading the position of the Republic of Cyprus, making it a regional hub for dealing with forest fires in the Eastern Mediterranean.

During his visit to the Air Base, the President of the Republic was accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Vassilis Palmas, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Konstantinos Letympiotis, the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Theodorou and officials.
