INTENSIVE CONTROLS IN SLAUGHTERHOUSES AND BUTCHERS AHEAD OF EASTER -  Filenews 4/4

From today, Saturday, the controls of the Veterinary Services (KY) in slaughterhouses, butchers and meat retail points are intensified in view of the Easter holidays, said the Senior Veterinary Officer, Sotiria Georgiadou.

Regarding foot-and-mouth disease, Ms. Georgiadou noted that by noon on Saturday, no new case had been identified.

"In case violations are detected, the products will be confiscated and the corresponding fines will be imposed," said the spokeswoman of the Veterinary Services in relation to the controls in the market.

The aim of the controls is to ensure that business managers continue to implement the prescribed food safety systems so that products are suitable for consumption during the Easter period.

In relation to foot-and-mouth disease, Sotiria Georgiadou stated that the infected units remain at 52, as until noon on Saturday no new case had been detected through the laboratory tests carried out.

The latest case was detected on Friday in a unit with 144 cattle in Geri.

"We continue sampling and tracing. For today, so far the results of the laboratory tests are negative," said Sotiria Georgiadou.

At the same time, vaccinations in cattle, sheep, goats and pigs continue, the spokesperson of the Veterinary Services concluded.
