The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) proceeded to impose an administrative fine of €3,000, after finding irregularities in the process of submitting claims for compensation by a specialist doctor specializing in ophthalmology.
According to the Organization's announcement, the violation concerned the submission of a claim for compensation for a visit that did not take place, as well as for services that had already been provided at an earlier stage to the same patient and not during the visit for which the doctor asked to be paid.
In fact, and as pointed out in the announcement, this particular case was not the only one, as it is a repetition of the same violation for the second time, by the same doctor.
At the same time, it was found that the compensation claims were not submitted directly by him, but by an employee of the doctor, who was using the personal access details of his account to the GHS IT system, which violates the security rules of the System.
The HIO emphasizes in its announcement that the imposition of administrative fines is part of the control and supervision mechanisms implemented "to ensure transparency, proper management of resources and the credibility of the GHS".
Providers' compliance checks are constantly ongoing. From January 1, 2026 until today, the HIO has imposed fines totalling €81,000 on one hospital and six GHS doctors for various misdemeanors.
Among them is the case of the hospital which failed to submit its claims for compensation on time, resulting in, among other things, absence of the medical history of the patients and the plastic surgeon who requested compensation by registering the same photo for different patients in the GHS software.
