DAM OCCUPANCY AT 33.9% - BETTER THAN LAST YEAR BUT NOT SUFFICIENT SAYS WDD OFFICER - Filenews 6/4

At 33.9% is the occupancy of the dams, at better levels than the corresponding period last year but not satisfactory enough to be carefree for the coming years, said Marios Hatzikostis, Chief Technical Engineer of the Water Development Department. The best monthly inflow was that of March, he said.

Mr. Hatzikostis stated that the occupancy in the dams today is at 33.9% and the stored quantity is 98.7 million cubic meters.

The total inflow of the last three days was 3.75 million cubic meters, said Mr. Hatzikostis, noting that the total inflow from October 1 was 81 million cubic meters.

Compared to the corresponding period last year, we are at better levels, he noted, since last year on this day the occupancy was at 24.1%, at 70 million cubic meters.

"We're pretty much better than last year, but not satisfying enough to be carefree for years to come," he said.

Asked, he said "we must always be very careful with the use of water", since, as he noted, droughts as it turned out to be a frequent phenomenon and get worse.

"This year we were lucky," said Mr. Hatzikostis, noting that the good inflows into the dams from October onwards were lifesaving.

According to Mr. Hatzikostis, the best monthly inflow was that of March. "A very rare phenomenon," he said, noting that March was better than all the previous months of winter.
