The procedures for the assessment and killing of animals continue in Nicosia and Larnaca, as part of the measures that are underway for foot-and-mouth disease, with the killings expected to continue throughout the week. So far, about 1,358 sheep, goats and 190 cattle have been slaughtered this week.
At the same time, the first positive pig farm in the area of Paliometochos, in the province of Nicosia, was confirmed by the laboratory of the Veterinary Services, after sampling was done due to suspicious clinical symptoms. This is a unit with a capacity of 4,000 pigs, a development that leads to the creation of a new protection zone with a radius of 3 kilometers and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 kilometers, west of Nicosia.
As far as the course of vaccinations is concerned, the second phase for cattle has reached 73.5%, while in sheep and goats it covers 56.3% of the animal population. At the same time, 84% of the units located within the already infected areas in Nicosia and Larnaca have so far been vaccinated in pigs.
In Pergamon, the second round of vaccination has been completed in nine livestock units, while it is still pending in three others, despite the fact that the livestock farmers have already consented. According to the competent authorities, the development of the actions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the United Nations, is expected to ensure the safe access of private veterinarians to carry out vaccinations.
So far, five (5) positive units of sheep and goats have been confirmed, in Geri, one (1) positive unit of sheep and goats in Dali and three (3) positive units of sheep and goats in Dromolaxia - Meneou, thus reaching 84 infected units in Nicosia (21) and Larnaca (63) within the already infected areas.
