One of William Shakespeare's greatest and most frantic comedies, Twelfth Night, is presented again on the Main Stage of THOC, thirty-one years after its first staging, in a provocative reading by the British Shakespeare director Owen Horsley.
In Illyria, in the once cheerful and glamorous but now faded seaside bar of Olivia, Viola is shipwrecked. Believing that her twin brother is missing, she disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. From this point the tangle of a story complicated and confusing, full of misunderstandings and subversive moods, begins to unravel: Viola is secretly in love with Orsino, he loves Olivia, who mourns for her lost brother, and Olivia falls in love with... Cesario, that is, the Viola. The intoxication of love takes over one character after another, and this new breath of life shakes this melancholic community to its foundations. A company of people sets up machinations, deceives and indulges in games, revealing the charming and at the same time dark side of erotic transformation.
Owen Horsley's adaptation marries sadness and joy in a comic and bizarre creation, with speech having two sides, since sometimes it serves the truth and sometimes the lie. Horsley coordinates a team of talented actors and contributors with the author's imaginative material, where movement, music and song are in tune with the antics and emotional turmoil of the heroes. The romantic story of disguises, cross-dressing and the fluidity of identities is transformed into a wonderful celebration of love, overwhelmed with love, sensitivity, mystery, laughter, tears, irony and madness.
