VETERINARY SERVICES - TODAY'S MOBILIZATION OF LIVESTOCK BREEDERS SHARTPLY INCREASES THE RISK OF SPREADING THE VIRUS - WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT AMPLING AND CONTROLS - Filenews 21/3
The Veterinary Services issued a statement, denying unsubstantiated reports regarding the epidemiological investigation, controls and sampling for foot-and-mouth disease, as well as the current mobilization of livestock breeders.
In their announcement, the competent services point out the need for proper information and avoidance of misinformation, underlining that the procedures for controlling and managing the situation are in full swing and are being implemented in accordance with the prescribed protocols. At the same time, they express concern about today's mobilization, noting that the gathering of livestock farmers may significantly increase the risk of spreading the virus, in a particularly critical period for livestock farming.
Why are the checks and sampling done?
Checks are not done randomly or without reason. The aim is to identify possible animal movements that may be associated with confirmed cases. This helps to protect the herds and limit the spread of the disease. There is no restriction on the time of checks and sampling.
What the laboratory tests show
The tests detect antibodies to the virus. It is important for breeders to know that antibodies from the vaccine are not considered a positive case. Veterinarians can distinguish vaccine antibodies from those derived from actual infection.
Information and communication
In order to avoid unnecessary travel and overcrowding, the Veterinary Services have already informed all livestock farmers from December 15 by disseminating information material, sms, etc.
In addition, we remind you that there are 24/7 telephone lines in each province, so anyone can ask for help or clarification on the following phones: 22805241, 25819512, 24821275, 24824555, 26821260.
Right of access for veterinary surgeons
Based on the legislation, veterinarians have the right to enter areas where animals are present, to carry out the necessary checks. This is not to make it difficult for livestock farmers, but to protect the entire industry.
Obligations and consequences
Veterinarians do not seek to punish anyone. However, the law provides that if someone obstructs or fails to comply with the procedures, they can lose their rights to compensation and be fined up to €5000.
Compliance also protects the farmer himself.
The Importance of Collaboration
The crisis can only be overcome with cooperation. The sooner we follow the protocols, the sooner we will return to normality.
Veterinarians and breeders are not opponents but allies on the same side: we want healthy animals, safe production for the well-being and stability of the industry.
