The Edit Gallery presents The Rise of the Sun, the Fall of Time, Danae Patsalou’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, a body of work that reflects on time, memory, and renewal through the parallel imagery of sunrise and archaeological discovery.
Through a series of paintings and drawings, the exhibition explores moments of revelation in which what was once hidden gradually comes into view. In the early hours of the morning, the rising sun briefly transforms the landscape, illuminating forms that moments before remained concealed in darkness. Though fleeting, this daily transition signals a beginning, shifting our perception of space and time.
Alongside these natural observations, Patsalou turns to the language of archaeology. Artefacts and fragments once buried beneath the earth reappear in the present much like memories resurfacing from the past. Their rediscovery suggests that time is not strictly linear but layered, allowing past and present to coexist and revealing meanings that may have long remained hidden.
The exhibition includes two groups of small-scale paintings. One series draws inspiration from the Ara Pacis in Rome, whose intricate vegetal reliefs the artist reinterprets through rhythmic and carefully observed compositions. The second series captures the stillness of sunrise, when light slowly emerges to reveal the surrounding world. Together, these works connect the rediscovery of the past with the daily renewal of light, suggesting that both excavation and dawn are acts of revelation.
