REACTIONS TO A POSSIBLE REFERRAL OF THE LAW ON VEHICLE INSURANCE - Filenews 23/3
The Pensioners' Branch of PASYDY, with the support of the pensioners of SEK and EKYSY, expresses a strong reaction to the prospect of referral of the law passed by the Parliament on March 5, 2026 and which amends the Vehicles (Third Party Liability Insurance) Laws of 2000 to 2023.
The announcement states that, according to information, the President of the Republic intends to refer back the law, after pressure from insurance companies, even though it was approved almost unanimously by the Parliament, with just one negative vote, after a parliamentary process that lasted three years.
As noted, the referral is expected to request the removal of the provision that obliges insurance companies to provide written justification when they refuse to insure persons for liability to a third party for the first time.
The organizations that co-signed the announcement argue that the issue is particularly serious, as third-party liability insurance is mandatory by law. As they state, if insurance companies reserve the right to reject applications without sufficient documentation, then the affected citizens are at risk of either being left without the possibility of moving or being forced to drive illegally without insurance coverage.
The announcement also makes special reference to the inadequacy of public transport in Cyprus, which, in their opinion, makes the consequences of such a development even more serious for those who will not be able to secure insurance.
The Pensioners' Branch of PASYDY calls on all MPs who had voted in favour of the law not to accept changes in the relevant provision and to maintain the existing text, arguing that it protects the interests of citizens.
The announcement of PASYDY is endorsed by the pensioners of SEK and EKYSY.
