PAPHOS - COASTAL EROSION PROBLEM - Filenews 9/3 by Dora Christodoulou
It may be related to this winter's rainfall, which in some cases was extreme and caused damage and problems, or it may have to do with the non-completion of coastal protection programs through breakwaters. But the fact is that this year, for the first time in a few years, the serious problem faced by coastal areas of Paphos returns in such an obvious way and magnitude: It is the erosion of the coasts, a problem that Geroskipou, Pegeia and Polis Chrysochous have been facing for decades.
After the case of Pegeia, which showed a relevant problem this winter, the reappearance of the problem in Polis Chrysochous was recently revealed. And a problem in fact, not at all of small dimensions, since according to the studies that had been carried out in previous years, the erosion observed in the coastal area of the Municipality of Polis, but also in the communities of Chrysochous Bay, in some cases it has exceeded 70 meters over time.
In the previous days, the authorities rushed again to the coastline of Chrysochous, towards the exit of Argaka, to see the problem and promote actions, since the intense bad weather of the previous two months caused the situation to worsen.
It is worth noting that due to the intense phenomena in the area of Istanbul, the municipal authority began to implement a relevant study of the Technical University of Athens 10 years ago, which provided for the shielding of part of the beach and the construction of fourteen wavebreakers in front of the Municipal Coast up to the camping area, with priority given to the construction of four of them in front of the Municipal Coast.
The project was implemented with a contribution of 50% from the Municipality of Polis and 50% from the State with a total expenditure of the first phase of €3.5 million.
