An alarm was raised on Wednesday morning (4/3) after information about a suspicious object heading towards Cyprus.

According to information from the Greek National Intelligence Service, an alarm was raised at the American embassy in Nicosia and the staff were taken to the basement as a precaution. Greek F-16s took off to intercept the suspicious object.

The alarm ended shortly before 10 and the staff of the American embassy returned to their duties. The presence of the Greek fighter jets in the air was also noticed by citizens.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis wrote in X that “a possible suspicious object was detected in the airspace near Lebanon. For precautionary reasons, all appropriate measures were taken by the competent authorities to investigate and, if necessary, deal with the incident. A further update will follow on the outcome.”

The Cabinet meeting scheduled for 9:30 was postponed while an emergency meeting of the National Security Council was decided at 12 noon.
