LIVESTOCK FARMERS TAKE TO THE STREETS - MARCH TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE WITH THE SLOGAN 'STOP THE KILLING OF OUR ANIMALS' ON SATURDAY 21 MARCH - Filenews 20/3
Livestock farmers are marching to the Presidential Palace on Saturday, expressing their strong reaction to the killings of asymptomatic animals as part of the measures for foot-and-mouth disease, but also to the sampling that, as they claim, officials of the Veterinary Services are trying to carry out on vaccinated animals.
The mobilization will start at 10:00 in the morning with a gathering point at the GSP stadium in Nicosia, while at 11:00 a march to the Presidential Palace is scheduled.
Livestock farmers demand, among other things, an immediate end to the horizontal slaughter of healthy and asymptomatic animals, an end to sampling that characterizes them as illegal and clear answers in relation to their compensation.
In their announcement, they claim that sampling outside the European protocol is invalid 28 days after the administration of the second dose of vaccine. At the same time, they speak of "double standards", stating that vaccinations are being carried out in the occupied areas, while, as they note, the certification of cheese factories and farms continues normally.
In addition, they demand an immediate announcement of the amounts that will be paid as compensation, arguing that the affected livestock farmers remain without clear information. In their call for a nationwide protest, the organizers use the slogan "Stop the killing of our animals", calling on citizens to support, as they say, "the people who feed you".
Particular reference is also made to the issue of the possibility of examining samples from private chemistry, which is also included in their requests.
Despite the harsh language of the announcement, the livestock farmers say that everyone will adhere to the biosecurity measures during the mobilization.
