LIMASSOL AMONG THE TOP THREE CITIES IN EUROPE FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

LIMASSOL AMONG THE TOP THREE CITIES IN EUROPE FOR SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY - Filenews 3/3

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works congratulates the Municipality of Limassol for its important distinction, as it is among the top three European cities to compete for the European Mobility Week 2025 Award, along with Innsbruck, Austria, and Riga, Latvia.

The distinction becomes particularly important, as a total of 2,771 cities from 46 countries participated in the campaign, which highlights the dynamic presence of Cypriot cities in European sustainable mobility policies.

The European Mobility Week, which takes place every year between 16 and 22 September, is the most important European initiative to promote modern, safe and accessible mobility options, with the aim of improving the daily commute of citizens and creating more functional and humane urban centres. At the national level, the campaign is coordinated by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, which has the responsibility of guiding, supporting and validating the participation of the Municipalities of the Republic of Cyprus.

The participation of Cypriot cities in the European Mobility Week is part of the overall strategy of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works to promote sustainable transport and improve daily mobility in urban areas.

As part of the campaign, the Municipality of Limassol implemented 46 actions in collaboration with more than 50 organizations and bodies, promoting the message "Mobility for all" and encouraging citizens to get to know in practice alternative ways of moving in urban space.

Of particular importance was the "European Car-Free Day", a key pillar of the campaign, through which the benefits of a city with reduced use of private vehicles and an enhanced role for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport are highlighted. In this context, the action "LAOU LAOU Open Street" transformed Ankaras Street and Kastro Square into a car-free zone, giving public space to citizens and offering an experiential experience of sustainable mobility.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, as the National Coordinator of EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK in Cyprus, has been implementing since 2018 a series of targeted actions to enhance the participation of Municipalities, including the creation of a cooperation network with local authorities, the establishment of national mobility awards awarded by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, the provision of promotional material and the development of a practical participation guide for Municipalities.

The increasing participation of Cypriot cities in recent years and the emergence of Limassol in the final European trio confirm the essential role of national coordination in promoting modern mobility policies with a direct impact on the quality of life of citizens.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alexis Vafeades, wishes the Municipality of Limassol every success in view of the award ceremony that will take place in Brussels on March 17, 2026.

This European distinction confirms that through the coordinating role of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the cooperation with local authorities, Cypriot cities adopt practices that enhance sustainable mobility and substantially improve the daily lives of citizens. The Ministry continues to actively support Municipalities, strengthening the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future for all.
