FOOT AND MOUTH - THREE NEW CASES IN DROMOLAXIA AND MENEOU - 49 INFECTED UNITS IN LARNACA AND NICOSIA - Filenews 26/3
The epidemiological picture of foot-and-mouth disease showed a new deterioration in the already burdened areas.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiadou, three new cases were confirmed in the already infected area of Dromolaxia - Meneou. The spread of the virus in these communities is of great concern, as it seems that the containment of the disease is becoming extremely difficult despite the strict measures.
The new cases were detected in two new sheep and goat farms and a cow breeding unit. The situation is constantly being evaluated. The appearance of new cases in an area that is already under strict surveillance demonstrates the aggressiveness of the virus", said Ms. Georgiadou.
With today's results, the map of the disease is formed in a total of 49 infected farms in Nicosia and Larnaca. In the same period, about 28,000 sheep and goats and 2,000 cows have been killed.
The Veterinary Services reiterate the call to livestock farmers for strict observance of biosecurity measures, the avoidance of movements of animals without permission and the immediate reporting of any suspicious symptoms.
