The Department of Fisheries finds losses of large fish populations from sea bass and sea bream, after the recent bad weather which caused serious damage to the fish farming equipment in Liopetri.
According to information from Filenews, the officials of the Department are waiting for information from the producers about the extent of the damage and the quantities that escaped into the sea. It is noted that each fish farm contains millions of fish, which makes calculating losses in fish populations from difficult to impossible.
It is worth noting that damage to fish farms is observed almost every year, a fact that mobilizes thousands of fishermen both in the area of Liopetri and in the area of Vasilikos, where the largest fish farm in Cyprus is located.
Appeal from the Department of Fisheries
The Department of Fisheries, wanting to protect the fish populations of sea bream and sea bass, two species that are particularly dear to Cypriot fishermen, appeals for compliance with the regulations on size and quantities.
The allowed size for catching sea bass is 25 cm while sea bream is 20 cm.
