"CYPRUS' LEGACY TO THE EU" THE SUPPORT OF MEMBER STATES - ENHANCED DETERRENCE FOR NEW INCIDENTS AFTER AKROTIRI - Filenews 19/3

Cyprus has the ability and operational capability to prevent a new incident towards the UK bases in Cyprus, due to the military support provided by Italy, Greece and France, with the parallel assistance of Spain and the Netherlands, a government source said on Thursday, noting that the response of EU member states is also a "legacy of Cyprus" to the Union.

Referring to the assistance of EU member states after the drone strike at Akrotiri Base on March 2, the source stressed that the fact that the response was immediate and strong sends multiple messages.

The same source said that this action of EU member states is a point of reference, noting that without the activation of Article 42 (7) of the Treaty on European Union, the response of the member states gave substance for the first time to this article, and was a "legacy of Cyprus to the EU".

It is noted that Article 42 (7) of the EU Treaty stresses that "in the event that a Member State is the subject of an armed attack on its territory, the other Member States must provide it with assistance and assistance by all the means at their disposal".

It states that "this does not affect the specific nature of the security and defence policy of some Member States".
