Specifically, around 7.30 last night, a 57-year-old man, a resident of the province of Nicosia, passed by a car driving from the crossing point from the occupied to the free areas of the Republic to Agios Dometios, where after an inspection by officials of the Customs Department, it was found that a second man, aged 27, a third-country national, was in the vehicle.
During his location, the 27-year-old allegedly reported to the officials of the Customs Department that he had paid a sum of money to the 57-year-old to transport him from the occupied areas to the free areas.
With the admission of the 27-year-old, the 57-year-old tried to escape in his car, making a U-turn to head towards the occupied areas. Members of the Police stopped him and despite the resistance that the 57-year-old put up, they proceeded to arrest him for self-inflicted offenses. In his possession, sums of money of €7,500 and 15,475 Turkish lira were found, the origin of which is being investigated, since the 57-year-old did not give satisfactory explanations for their possession.

A lawyer whose license was revoked by the Disciplinary Court for 14 months, wanted to go in and out of the Immigration Department and perform work. They closed the door on him and he complained to the Supreme Court, which rejected his application to order the Deputy Minister of Immigration to accept that he conducts non-legal work.
The applicant is a lawyer and maintains a law firm with a turnover throughout Cyprus, offering, among other things, services related to immigration, international protection, civil registry, asylum services and other related issues. On 26/11/2025, the Disciplinary Council of Lawyers suspended his lawyer's license for a period of 14 months from 17/12/2025 in case no. 67/24. As he argued in his application to the Supreme Court, the above decision does not extend to a prohibition on practicing a profession other than the practice of law and the immigration, civil registry, asylum services and other services are not related to the profession of lawyer, nor do they constitute the practice of the legal profession.
He had attempted several times to carry out work in the Immigration Department of the Deputy Ministry as well as his representatives, but in a letter on 16/1/2026 which was sent by an officer of the Immigration Department, he was notified that, given the suspension of the license to practice the profession of lawyer, he was prevented from forwarding or submitting requests related to the responsibilities of the Immigration Department and that these would not be further handled or informed.
He reacted first with a letter and then with the registration in the Supreme Court of a unilateral Application seeking the Court's permission to register an Application with a summons to issue a Privileged Mandamus Warrant, in which: "... order the Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, or the director of the Immigration Department or the officers to allow the exercise of the applicant's profession or profession and or the offer of services related to immigration issues, international protection, etc.
The Court held that there is no distinct demand on the part of the applicant to the Deputy Minister of Immigration for their compliance with a specific legal obligation. An applicant must, the Court notes, before applying to the Court for permission, have applied to the public body for the performance of his duty, but the latter must have refused to comply. The competent authority must know what is required of it
Finally, the Supreme Court distinguished that the applicant's general and vague references to his total prohibition to perform work not in the capacity of a lawyer but in another capacity, without reference to anything specific, cannot fill the above gap. In the end, the application was rejected.
