WHILST WORKS AT AGIOS DOMETIOS CROSSING HAVE BEEN COMPLETED, STAFFING OF THE NEW CHECKPOINTS TO OPEN THE THIRD LANE IS PENDING

 Filenews 17 February 2026

The works for the opening of a third traffic lane at the Agios Dometios roadblock, which included works within the Green Line, have been completed. Now, what remains to be done in order to give the new lane to traffic is to proceed with the staffing of the new checkpoints by the Police and the Customs Department.

The project was funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus.

As announced by UNDP Cyprus, "the extension of the Agios Dometios roadblock, funded by the EU, has now been completed. The upgraded roadblock now includes an additional lane in each direction, as well as a new pedestrian walkway, marking a significant improvement to support daily commute in Nicosia."

The project, as he states, was implemented through close coordination between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot contractors, under the technical guidance of UNDP, highlighting the practical cooperation that underlies this effort.

What do the projects include?

According to a statement published by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, the extension of this heavily burdened roadblock aims to ensure smoother traffic and alleviate the problems faced by the thousands of drivers who cross the Ceasefire Line in Nicosia every day, as well as for the surrounding neighbourhoods that for years have been affected by the extremely increased traffic.

"The project reflects the European Commission's firm support and commitment to improving the daily lives of Cypriots and encouraging crossings through the Ceasefire Line, with the aim of a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem for the benefit of all Cypriots and the island as a whole," it added.

As stated, "the upgrade increases the capacity of the roadblock by adding an additional traffic lane in each direction, expanding the lanes from two to three, and includes the construction of a new pedestrian walkway. These improvements are expected to facilitate more efficient crossings through the Ceasefire Line, reduce congestion and enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians."

It is noted that the project was funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus. It was designed to meet the growing demand at this key crossing point, through capacity expansion and improved traffic management, in close cooperation with the bi-communal Technical Committee on Roadblocks. The construction works were carried out by two contractors, one Greek Cypriot and one Turkish Cypriot, who worked in coordination for the timely and efficient completion of the project.

"The European Union remains fully committed to supporting confidence-building measures and practical projects that promote contact, cooperation and mutual understanding between the two communities, in the context of its long-standing goals in Cyprus and its firm support for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem," the statement concludes.
