The Department of Forests made three basic recommendations for the protection of forests and the countryside in view of the three days of February 21-23, calling on the public to show increased attention during its excursions for the carnival and Green Monday.
In his announcement, it is particularly emphasized that lighting a fire anywhere in the countryside is prohibited, except only for the preparation of food within the specially allowed and arranged areas located in organized picnic and camping areas.

It is also noted that lighting a fire within state forests or at a distance of 2 km from its outskirts, is an offense which, according to the Forestry Law of 2012, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to €25,000.00 or both penalties together. Causing a fire is an offense that carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years or a fine of €100,000.00 or both sentences together.
It is emphasized that when going out to the forests and the countryside, cutting or uprooting wildflowers and shrubs is avoided, since several of them are strictly protected, while some may be endemic or even in danger of extinction.

The Department of Forests also urges the public to make sure that the area remains clean at the end of their excursion, by placing all the waste we create in garbage cans "or taking it home with us". The announcement adds that if we leave them, even in plastic bags, they will be dispersed by stray dogs, cats and foxes.
In addition, the Department of Forests informs the public that because in some areas there is an infestation of pine trees by the pityokampi insect, they should be especially careful. It is recommended to avoid staying under or near affected pine trees as well as contact with the caterpillar or its nest. It is noted that anyone who comes into contact with the insect caterpillar or its nests and presents a skin problem, should seek medical advice and care.
