The process of replacing a municipal councillor in the Municipality of Paphos is underway, for which an issue of incompatibility has arisen, according to the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, Ellikos Ilias.
In his statements, Mr. Elias stated that the Deputy District Officer of Paphos as Returning Officer will replace the Municipal Councillor of Paphos in accordance with article 38(4) of the Municipalities Law.
According to information, the Municipal Councillor in a letter sent to the Deputy District Officer of Paphos states that he accepts his resignation in protest because, as he explains, in his own judgment, this is not legal and that he reserves his rights.
Mr. Elias clarified that it does not matter if he is a contractor or not.
It is noted that the issue of incompatibility for a Municipal Councillor who also holds the position of a teaching officer arose in the Municipality of Paphos, while a relevant complaint was submitted by telephone to the competent Service of the Ministry of Interior. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Law does not make any distinction, pointing out that incompatibility arises whether it is a permanent educational employee or a fixed-term or indefinite teacher.
The position of Municipal Councillor is expected to be taken over by Ioakeim Agathangelou as the next of the party combination with which this resigned Municipal Councillor was elected.
