THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF POLIS CHRYSOCHOUS IS UPSIDE DOWN - COMPLAINTS ABOUT ABUSE OF POWER AND POOR ADMINISTRATION

Filenews 4 February 2026 - by Dora Christodoulou

A written complaint to the Minister of the Interior and the Auditor General of the Republic was sent a few days ago by the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, in which specific cases are denounced which, according to the complainant, constitute abuse of power and poor administration by the municipal authority.

The complaint, revealed today by Filenews, was made by the Deputy Mayor of the Kritos Terra district of the Municipality of Polis, Dervis Charalambous, who claims that the majority of the City Municipal Council illegally proceeded to a decision to rehire the seasonal workers whose contracts were expiring, without announcing the positions, because four of its members had a first-degree relationship with an equal number of workers and specifically were their parents.

As stated in the written complaint, the matter came before the Municipal Council of Polis Chrysochous a year ago, when the employment period of the 18 seasonal workers of the municipal authority was expiring. According to the Deputy Mayor of the Kritos Terra district, the Municipal Secretary informed the plenary about this fact and pointed out that based on the laws and regulations, the Municipal Council should proceed with the renewal of the contracts for another month, so that the process of the new announcement of the positions can then be launched and at the same time the municipal authority will approve the relevant announcement.

Nevertheless, Mr. Charalambous claims, the Mayor of the City insisted on rehiring all seasonal workers, except one, by the end of the year and suggested that the Municipality announce the remaining positions for the recruitment of new staff.

Although some members of the Municipal Council, the complaint states, proposed that all positions be advertised as provided and that priority be given to already serving workers whose contract expires, however the majority of the body voted in favour of the Mayor's proposal, he emphasizes, attributing it to the fact that four of the members of the Council are parents of seasonal workers.

The minority voters in this decision, according to the complaint Dervi Charalambous, raised the issue of the validity of the decision and violation of regulations since people who have a first-degree relationship with the employees wrongly participated in the vote.

The case, according to our information, causes tremors in the municipal authority, with the possibility of the involvement of the Police in what is happening visible, since the Deputy Mayor of Crete Terra seems to have the intention to do so if they are not followed, as stated in the regulations.
