The EOA Nicosia is ready to take over the management of the restored Kotsiatis landfill, in order to manage the biogas trapped in it.
The above was stated by the president of the EOA, Mr. Konstantinos Georghadjis, during the report of the 18 months since the operation of the Organization.
As he explained, the conversion of biogas into electricity (RES) will help, through compensatory measures, local communities to relieve themselves of the burden they have suffered in recent decades from the use of the landfill and, in addition, the EOA to reduce its dependence on the conventional electricity market and at the same time achieve a reduction in the carbon footprint of the Agency. He also said that with the proper management of biogas, this natural resource will stop burning through torches and burden the area.
As for the number of pending development permits received by the EOA Nicosia, they are really scary, considering that as of July 1, 2024, it had 325,000 files in its drawers.
According to the president of the EOA, Mr. Konstantinos Georghadjis, during the report of the 18 months since the operation of the Organization, an increasing rate of processing of submitted applications is recorded monthly, with remarkable percentages (94% in urban planning and 99% in building permits).
This, despite the computerized and other problems that existed from the beginning and what was added along the way.
Referring to the water supply, Mr. Georghadjis noted that the EOA currently manages a water supply network with a length of 2,565 km, increased by 115 km. compared to 2024, serving more than 170,000 water meters. During the period in question, 8,248 fault repairs, network upgrades and water meter replacements with smart systems were carried out, with the aim of saving water, reducing losses and ensuring the quality of drinking water. As he explained, particular emphasis is placed on the reduction of unbilled water, which is currently at about 20%, with a clear plan for further reduction in the coming years through investments in technology, leak detection and infrastructure upgrades.
As far as the sewerage sector is concerned, the Organization manages a network of 1,645 kilometers, which has been extended to suburban and mountainous Nicosia. Projects are being implemented to upgrade pumping stations that will increase their pumping capacity by 20% and wastewater treatment plants, increasing capacity and ensuring the operational safety of the system, while major development projects are planned for 2026 in urban and rural areas.
In addition, the announcement of a tender for construction sewerage projects in the Municipality of South Nicosia-Dali and Kato Pyrgos Tyllirias, with a total value of about €85 million, is planned.
The announcement of the project for the reconstruction of the central sewage pipeline in Mia Milia, with the simultaneous installation of a pipeline to return the treated water to the free areas, is considered a huge success.
Regarding the solid waste management sector, Mr. Georghadji said that the EOA Nicosia is proceeding with the development and expansion of Green Points, collection points and reuse infrastructure, strengthening the circular economy and contributing to the reduction of waste that goes to landfill.
In addition to the eight existing Green Points in operation in the Nicosia District, the construction of five more new Green Points is planned. Three of them are already in the implementation phase, while for the other two, the competent state services are in the process of siting them, before the EOA Nicosia undertakes their construction.
