The Electricity Market Association underlines the need for a careful evaluation of any legislative intervention that affects the Competitive Electricity Market, on the occasion of the debate in Parliament on the bill that allows Cyta to expand its activities in the energy sector as well.
In a statement, the SAH points out that the discussion is taking place at a critical juncture, as the Competitive Electricity Market is still in the early stages of its operation. As he emphasizes, the central goal must remain to ensure the proper functioning of the market, the protection of healthy and undistorted competition, the equal treatment of all participants and, ultimately, the long-term sustainability of the energy sector for the benefit of consumers and the economy.
The Association recognizes that strengthening competition and widening market participation can contribute positively to reducing costs and improving services, provided that there is a stable, transparent and equal operating framework for all. It stresses that the participation of any organisation must be done with a clear separation of roles, without distortions or structural advantages, and without the risk of creating new dominant positions, in full compliance with the national and European regulatory framework.
Particular reference is made to the risk of regulations that, even without intention, can lead to an uneven competitive start among participants, altering the structure of the market and limiting consumer choice in the long run. As noted, the experience from the European markets shows that healthy competition requires equal opportunities, transparency and predictability of rules.
At the same time, the SAH points out that, according to what was reported in Parliament, there was no prior public consultation on this bill. Issues that directly affect the operation and structure of the electricity market, he emphasizes, require substantial dialogue with all stakeholders, in order to ensure balanced and informed decisions.
The Association reaffirms its role as an institutional interlocutor of the state and declares itself ready to contribute with documented positions to a meaningful dialogue on the future of the market. The goal, as stated, remains to ensure a healthy, sustainable and competitive electricity market, with the sole aim of the public interest and the benefit of consumers.
