PROUNTZOS - A NEW PASSAGE IN KAIMAKLI IS ON THE TABLE FOR DECONGESTION - Filenews 25/2
A proposal for the opening of a passage in Kaimakli, an issue that he discussed during the last year with the "mayor" of occupied Nicosia Mehmet Harmanci, was raised by the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, to the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou.
Mr. Prountzos, in his statement, clarified that the opening of a checkpoint in Mia Milia is the easiest solution from a technical point of view as well, however, since there seem to be obstacles and difficulties, a proposal was put on the table for a passage on Agios Hilarionos in Kaimakli, for the passage of vehicles.
As he said, it is possible to open this passage and carry out the necessary works, noting once again that they do not deviate from the goal of opening Mia Milia together with the passage in Athienou-Piroi-Aglantzia, but put alternative ways out for discussion.
The Mayor stressed that at the moment the Agios Dometios roadblock is under the greatest pressure with huge congestion and a host of problems for the neighbours. He explained that with the opening of the passage in Kaimakli there will be decongestion.
At the moment, three of the seven canopies are operating at the Agios Dometios roadblock for the inspection, which are not always staffed, resulting in huge delays. Mr. Prountzos explained that the situation is also more aggravated due to the strict controls per vehicle as a result of compliances for full accession to the Schengen Agreement.
