PRESIDENTIAL PARDON FOR 11 CONVICTS - CONDITION FOR THEIR IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM CYPRUS

A presidential pardon was granted to eleven convicts, foreign nationals, on the condition of their immediate removal, the Ministry of Justice states, noting at the same time that following the instructions of Minister Konstantinos Fytiris, their release and immediate deportation will take place on Friday.

As stated in an announcement by the Ministry, "in the context of the broader policy for the decongestion of the Prisons, as announced by the President of the Republic and implemented following instructions from the Minister of Justice and Public Order to the competent authorities, the release and immediate deportation of eleven foreign convicts is being carried out today for reasons of public interest".

To these convicts, a Presidential pardon is added, on the condition of their immediate removal from the Republic of Cyprus.

It is noted that all eleven convicts were scheduled to be released in 2026.

In this context, the announcement continued, the procedures provided for by law were immediately activated, resulting in the deportation of the persons in question, as well as their registration on the list of prohibited persons (stop list), so that they cannot return to the Republic of Cyprus.

"This action is part of a broader and coherent set of measures implemented to address the chronic problem of prison overcrowding, with full respect for the rule of law and with a view to strengthening public safety," the announcement concludes.
