PHEDONOS CASE - NEW ALLEGATIONS ARE BEING EXAMINED. HIS WIFE HAS WRITTEN ASKING FOR INVESTIGATIONS TO CEASE

Filenews 2 February 2026

The evaluation of all information regarding the case of the Mayor of Paphos Phaedon Phedonos by the Cyprus Police is in full swing, according to statements by the Spokesman of the Police Headquarters, Byron Byron.

As Mr. Byron stated, the Police are "evaluating all the information", clarifying that the ex officio investigation against the Mayor of Paphos continues in relation to the alleged case of abuse of a woman, specifically his wife, in Paphos.

At the same time, new allegations against the Mayor for the possibility of committing other criminal offenses, which saw the light of day on social media, will be examined, through the receipt of a testimony.

At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior is waiting for the official response of the Police, in order to decide its next steps, i.e. whether or not the case of the beating is substantiated. In the event that the Police respond that an issue arises in relation to the Mayor of Paphos, the Ministry of the Interior will turn to the Legal Service, as legal advisor to the Government, to make the final decision regarding the possibility of putting Mr. Phedonos on holiday.

On the contrary, in the event that the Police deems that there is no issue against the Mayor of Paphos, the Ministry of the Interior will not seek an opinion from the Legal Service nor will it proceed to take any measures, including the holiday, as he pointed out.

In his statements, the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, Elikkos Ilia, stated that Article 113 of the Municipalities Law of 2022, which came into force on July 1, 2024, defines the cases in which a Mayor, Deputy Mayor or Municipal Councillor is suspended. As he explained, one of these cases is the start of an investigation by the prosecuting authorities for an offense that carries a prison sentence of three years or more.

In the meantime, the Police confirmed the receipt of a letter from the wife of the Mayor of Paphos, requesting the termination of the investigations. For his part, the Mayor of Paphos, in a post on Social Media, welcomed the conduct of the ex officio investigation in relation to the alleged case of abuse of a woman, expressing the belief that it will contribute to the restoration of his name. At the same time, he stated that he is determined to continue the fight for cleansing to the end, despite the pressures and threats that, as he claims, he is receiving.

It is recalled that the Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, in his public statement spoke of a "merciless war" against him by an "alliance of political and economic entanglement and organized crime", referring to an "attempt to exterminate him at personal and family cost".

In the meantime, a meeting of the Paphos Municipal Council has been set for today at 18:00, with the object of examining various pending issues. It is recalled that the previous plenary session was cancelled and rescheduled for today, without so far there being any new cancellation.
