PARTY FOR THE ANIMALS - SERIOUS SPIKES FOR INACTION OF AUTHORITIES IN CASE OF CAT ABDUCTIONS - THEY DEMAND THOROUGH CHECKS AT PORTS & AIRPORTS

 Filenews 16 February 2026

The Party for the Animals denounces the serious case involving a possible organized abduction of cats, talking about inadequate management by the competent authorities, despite the fact that specific evidence has been submitted since January 25, 2026. At the same time, it calls for immediate investigative actions and controls at ports and airports, warning that the issue exposes the country internationally.

The announcement follows in full

For weeks, following an official citizen complaint on 25/01/2026, specific details have been known, including the name and police station involved. Nevertheless, while the complaints are multiplying and the concern of society is intensifying, the management of this extremely serious case so far remains inadequate and without tangible results in terms of police investigations.

The Party for the Animals of Cyprus, after an in-depth investigation, finds that this is not an isolated incident. On the contrary, there are indications of possible organized action related to the abduction of cats, either for exploitation or for their export abroad. These indications cannot be ignored or downplayed.

The thesis that a hypothesis cannot be established because the animals do not have a microchip is legally and morally problematic. Animals that are systematically fed, neutered and cared for by volunteers are under clear human responsibility and protection. The absence of electronic tagging does not negate the existence of guardianship or the obligation to investigate possible offences.

We demand from the competent authorities to proceed immediately, without delays and excuses, to substantial investigative actions to locate the specific woman, whose details are already known. At the same time, the Veterinary Services are called upon to carry out thorough checks in ports and airports for cases of mass export of cats, in order to determine if an organized ring is operating.

We categorically state that we are ready to actively contribute to the investigation of the case. Inaction is not an option. The issue has already taken on dimensions that expose the country internationally.

Cyprus must prove that it respects culture, legality and animal protection. Otherwise, the designation "island of love" risks being replaced by an image of indifference and tolerance towards abuse.
