PARTY FOR THE ANIMALS - QUESTIONS ABOUT DELAYS IN THE STERLIZATION PROGRAMME FOR CATS & TEMPORARY DOG HOUSING FACILITY

 Filenews 15 February 2026

The Party for the Animals of Cyprus complains of a delay in the implementation of the government's program for the sterilization of stray cats, asking for immediate and official information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In a statement, he recalls that on October 4, 2025, an increase in the fund for cat sterilizations from €100,000 to €300,000 was announced, as well as the launch of a government program for the period January 1, 2026 to 2029. However, according to the Party for the Animals of Cyprus, to date no practical implementation has been presented nor has there been official information on the progress of implementation.

In the same context, it is pointed out that there has been no progress on other announcements concerning animal welfare, such as the creation of a Regional Temporary Dog Housing Facility in Paliometochos, with a budget of €150,000.

The Party for the Animals of Cyprus reports that it receives an increasing number of phone calls from animal welfare organizations and volunteers, who ask for clear information about the sterilization program, at a time when – as noted – the uncontrolled reproduction of stray cats continues and the problem of overpopulation is worsening.

In this context, the party raises questions about the body responsible for the delay, the stage at which the process is and the administrative level at which the implementation has been suspended, calling on the competent ministry and the bodies involved to take an immediate position, giving a clear timetable for actions.
