PAPHOS COAST - HEAVY RAINFALL ALSO REVEALED 'EROSION'

Filenews 24 February 2026 - by Dora Christodoulou

Among the many good things that the heavy rainfall has brought to our country in recent months, it has also contributed to the "unearthing" of a chronic serious problem faced by coastal areas of Paphos: It is the erosion of the coasts, a problem that Geroskipou, Pegeia and Polis Chrysochous are also facing.

After the case of Pegeia, which showed a related problem this winter, yesterday the reappearance of the problem was revealed in Polis Chrysochous as well. And a problem in fact, not at all of small dimensions, since according to the studies that had been carried out in previous years, the erosion observed in the coastal area of the Municipality of Polis, but also in the communities of Chrysochous Bay, in some cases has exceeded 70 meters over time.

Today, the authorities rushed to the coastline again to see the problem and promote actions, since the intense bad weather of these months caused the situation to worsen.

It is worth noting that due to the intense phenomena in the area of Polis, the municipal authority implemented a relevant study of the Technical University of Athens about 10 years ago, which provided for the shielding of part of the beach and the construction of fourteen wave breakers in front of the Municipal Coast up to the camping area, with priority given to the construction of four of them in front of the Municipal Coast.

The project was implemented with a contribution of 50% from the Municipality of Polis and 50% from the State with a total expenditure of the first phase of €3.5 million.
