NEW TELEPHONE SCAM THROUGH VIBER

Pafos Live 18 February 2026

The Police recommend the public's attention to a new type of telephone scams through the Viber application which falsely impersonate the Cyprus Police.

Specifically, fraudsters through the communication application – Viber, call unsuspecting citizens to a video call, falsely pretending that they are communicating on behalf of the Police.

Specifically, according to a complaint made today to the Police, a person received a call from a foreign country, in which an unknown man pretended to be the Chief of Police and stated that he was conducting immigration control and financial fraud allegedly and managed to convince the victim to give personal information as well as credit card details.

During the conversation, the perpetrator activated the camera where he appeared to be sitting on a chair in a police uniform without his head visible, while on his profile he had a photo of an Assistant Chief of Police with a profile name, Cyprus Police.

• The public is invited to be particularly attentive and:

• NOT to respond to the calls and instructions received from the fraudsters.

• Not respond to any links sent.

• Not to reveal to others codes that they may have received on their mobile phone.

In case bank data was declared during such a call, the public should inform their Banking institution IMMEDIATELY to avoid unwanted use of their data.
