 Filenews16 February 2026 - by Angelos Nikolaou

Three provinces of Cyprus will enter a state of water saving from tomorrow, as the scheduled maintenance at the Dhekelia Desalination Plant is expected to affect the smooth water supply of a large part of the network.

According to an official announcement by the Water Development Department (WDD), the supply of drinking water will be significantly reduced for three days, affecting the districts: Larnaca, Nicosia, Famagusta.

The works, which are part of the regular maintenance framework of the Unit's facilities, will begin on Tuesday, February 17 and are expected to be completed on Thursday, February 19. During this time, the plant's water production will be significantly reduced.

The WDD assures that it is in constant contact with all stakeholders for the rational management of stocks, in order to meet the basic needs of the residents. However, the contribution of citizens is considered crucial.

Specifically, consumers are invited to:

• Limit the use of water to the absolutely necessary needs.

• Avoid any unnecessary consumption

• Demonstrate responsibility for ensuring the adequacy of water resources.

The Department of Water Development expressed its apologies for the inconvenience that may be caused to the public, underlining that the maintenance of the infrastructure is necessary for its smooth operation in the long run.

Normal flow is expected to be gradually restored after the completion of work on Thursday.

Maintenance works at the Dekeleia Desalination Plant

The WDD informs the public that from Tuesday, February 17 until Thursday, February 19, the supply of drinking water in the Districts of Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta will be reduced. The decrease is due to scheduled maintenance works at the Dhekelia Desalination Plant, which are part of the maintenance of its facilities.

The WDD, in cooperation with all stakeholders, will make every effort to optimally manage the available quantities of water and to meet the water supply needs of the three provinces as much as possible.

The public is requested to, especially during this period, limit the use of water to the absolutely necessary until the reopening of the Desalination Plant, while it is noted that the effective use of water will contribute significantly to addressing the water shortage that plagues our country.

The public is invited to limit water use to a minimum and avoid any unnecessary consumption. The responsible and prudent use of water contributes substantially to the collective effort to ensure the adequacy of water resources.

The WDD thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation and apologizes for any inconvenience that may be caused.
