LIMASSOL MUNICIPALITY - PROPOSALS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF THE CITY CENTRE

Filenews 4 February 2026

The goal of the Municipality is to create a more functional, safe and humane center, which belongs primarily to its people, said the Mayor of Limassol, Yiannis Armeftis, at the beginning of a cycle of public consultations for the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, with the first focusing on the city center.

As stated in an announcement by the Municipality, the first consultation, which took place last Saturday, gathered a large number of citizens, professionals and representatives of institutions, confirming the strong interest of society in issues that directly affect the daily life and operation of the urban center.

The consultation concerned two main areas of the center of Limassol, namely, the western part, enclosed by Navarinou, Ellados and Eleftherias streets, and the eastern part, enclosed by Gladstonos, Olympian, 28th October and Anexartisias streets.

The study was presented by three Cypriot universities, the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology and Frederick University, which have undertaken the conduct and scientific support of the public consultation, utilizing their academic experience and knowledge in participatory planning processes.

At the beginning of the event, the Mayor of Limassol stressed that traffic is one of the most important problems of the city, which cannot be addressed with fragmented solutions, but requires overall planning, determination and active participation of citizens. As he mentioned, the goal of the Municipality is to create a more functional, safe and humane center, which belongs primarily to its people.

The proposals, it is added, include mild one-way streets as a transitional stage, with the aim of improving traffic flow, increasing road safety and gradually upgrading public space, with the prospect of wider pedestrian streets.

Next Saturday, February 7, the second public consultation will take place, at the "Panos Solomonides" Cultural Center (10:00), which will concern the proposed traffic arrangements and one-way streets in the area of Neapolis, in part of the road network within the area enclosed by Griva Digeni, Archbishop Makarios III and 28th October streets.

The Municipality of Limassol invites all interested parties to actively participate in this process as well, contributing substantially to the design of a more functional, safe and humane urban environment.
